Grundannahme

Grundannahme is a basic assumption underlying a theory, model, or method. The term combines Grund meaning “base, foundation” and Annahme meaning “assumption.” In German academic usage it denotes a condition taken to be true for the sake of argument or analysis, typically without direct proof within the framework in question.

In science and research, Grundannahmen define the scope and structure of an analysis. They may concern the behavior of a system, the properties of data, or the applicability of a model. For example, a statistical model might assume that data are independent and identically distributed; a physical theory might assume that the laws of nature are homogeneous over time and space. These assumptions make it possible to derive predictions, estimate parameters, or test hypotheses. If a Grundannahme is violated, conclusions may be biased or invalid.

Grundannahmen are distinct from hypotheses or premises in a logical argument. A hypothesis is a testable statement, while a Grundannahme is a starting condition that need not be tested within the model. In philosophy, Grundannahmen can underpin a worldview or a framework of justification. In practice, researchers should state their Grundannahmen explicitly and assess their reasonableness and the sensitivity of results to changes in these assumptions.
