Grundabweichungen, which translates to "ground deviations" or "base deviations" in English, is a term used in metrology and engineering to describe deviations of a feature's size from its nominal size. Specifically, it refers to the permissible limits of variation allowed for the actual size of a manufactured part relative to its specified nominal size. These deviations are crucial for ensuring interchangeability and proper function of components within an assembly.

The concept of Grundabweichungen is closely related to tolerance. While tolerance defines the total permissible range of variation, Grundabweichungen often refers to the deviation from the nominal size at either the upper or lower limit of that tolerance. For instance, a shaft with a nominal diameter of 10 mm and a tolerance of +0.1 mm / -0.05 mm has a maximum allowable size of 10.1 mm and a minimum allowable size of 9.95 mm. The Grundabweichungen in this case would be +0.1 mm and -0.05 mm, indicating the deviation from the 10 mm nominal size at the upper and lower bounds, respectively.

Understanding and specifying Grundabweichungen is essential for manufacturing processes. It allows designers to define the acceptable range of dimensional variation for parts, ensuring that they will fit and function correctly when assembled with other components, even if each individual part is not manufactured to the exact nominal dimension.
