Greypeak

Greypeak is a prominent mountain in the Greystone Range, located in the northern Mistwood Highlands near the town of Silvervale. The summit reaches approximately 2,100 meters above sea level, with slight variation among surveys. Its gray, schist-rich geology gives the mountain its name and a cliff-dominated profile on the northern face.

Geology: The massif consists mainly of metamorphic rocks, including slate and schist with interlayers of quartzite. It formed during the late Paleozoic orogeny and has been modified by glaciation during the Pleistocene. The upper slopes are bare rock, while lower elevations host mixed coniferous forest transitioning to alpine meadows above the treeline.

Climate and ecology: Greypeak experiences a cool temperate climate with significant winter snowfall and strong orographic precipitation on the western flank. Summers are short and mild. Flora shifts from forest on the lower elevations to dwarf shrubs, grasses, and cushion moss near the summit. The area is habitat for species such as alpine chough, rock ptarmigan, and alpine marmot, with red deer in foothill habitats.

Human activity: Exploration and mining of slate occurred in the 19th century, leaving little visible infrastructure. Today the peak is a destination for day hikes and supported by a trail network and a small visitor center at the foothills. A nature reserve designation protects the summit region and surrounding habitats. Seasonal restrictions may apply to nesting birds and delicate meadows.

Notable features: The Grey Face, a prominent cliff line on the northern flank; the Summit Dome, a broad shoulder near the apex; and Cloudbank Pass, a popular approach route. Greypeak is a symbol of the region's rugged alpine scenery.
