Grenzerträge, also known as marginal utility or marginal product in different contexts, refers to the additional benefit or output gained from consuming or producing one more unit of a good or service. In economics, the concept is fundamental to understanding consumer behavior and producer decisions.

For consumers, grenzerträge describes the extra satisfaction derived from consuming an additional unit of a product. This is often subject to the law of diminishing marginal utility, which states that as a person consumes more of a good, the additional satisfaction from each subsequent unit tends to decrease. For example, the first slice of pizza might bring immense satisfaction, while the fifth slice offers much less enjoyment.

For producers, grenzerträge, often referred to as marginal product, signifies the additional output generated by adding one more unit of a factor of production, such as labor or capital. Similar to consumer utility, the law of diminishing marginal returns suggests that at some point, adding more of a variable input will lead to smaller increases in output, assuming other inputs remain fixed. For instance, adding a tenth worker to a small factory might not increase production as much as adding the second worker did.
