Grensstelling

Grensstelling is a Dutch term used to refer to a statement about the limit or boundary of a quantity. It is commonly used in mathematics, particularly in real analysis, calculus and the study of sequences, to denote a proposition that specifies the limiting value of a function or sequence under given conditions. The word is formed from grens (limit, boundary) and stelling (statement, theorem).

In mathematics, a grensstelling states that as the input approaches a certain point or infinity, the quantity tends to a particular value. For example, if lim x->0 f(x) = L, then for operations that preserve limits (such as multiplying by a constant), lim x->0 c f(x) = cL, and lim x->0 f(x) + g(x) = L + M when lim x->0 g(x) = M. These statements are foundational to the rigorous definition of limits and continuity.

Beyond pure math, grensstellingen appear in applied disciplines to express boundary conditions or limiting behavior of models. In physics or engineering, a grensstelling may specify maximum or minimum allowable values (grenswaarden) or the behavior of a system at its borders.

In Dutch-language texts, the term can also be used loosely to describe any assertion that sets a boundary for a claim or scope in argumentation or theory-building.
