Gradations

Gradation, or gradations (plural), denotes a progression through a series of steps or degrees, typically involving gradual change from an initial state to a final one. The concept emphasizes continuity and small, incremental differences between adjacent stages. The word derives from Latin gradus, meaning “step,” through French gradation.

Applications and examples of gradation are widespread. In art and design, gradations describe smooth transitions in color, lightness, or value. Gradients and shading rely on continuous tonal changes to convey depth and realism. In measurement and instrumentation, graduations are marks on scales (such as rulers, thermometers, or gauges) that indicate specific increments, enabling precise readings.

In natural history and biology, gradation is used to describe continuous variation across a population or fossil record, often in the context of gradualism—the idea that evolution proceeds through small, cumulative changes rather than abrupt jumps. In these contexts, identifying discrete boundaries between forms can be challenging or arbitrary.
