Gproteinikäytäntöiset is a Finnish term that translates to "G protein-coupled" in English. It refers to a large family of transmembrane receptors that play a crucial role in cellular signaling. These receptors are involved in a vast array of physiological processes, including vision, smell, taste, neurotransmission, and hormonal regulation.

When a signaling molecule, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter, binds to the extracellular domain of a G protein-coupled receptor, it causes a conformational change in the receptor. This change, in turn, activates an associated intracellular G protein. A G protein is a heterotrimeric protein composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. Upon activation, the alpha subunit of the G protein exchanges its bound GDP for GTP and dissociates from the beta-gamma dimer.

The activated alpha subunit, or sometimes the beta-gamma dimer, then interacts with and modulates the activity of various effector proteins within the cell. These effector proteins can be enzymes, such as adenylyl cyclase or phospholipase C, or ion channels. The downstream effects of this interaction lead to the generation of second messengers, such as cyclic AMP (cAMP) or inositol trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG), which then trigger a cascade of intracellular events, ultimately altering cellular function.

The G protein-coupled receptor superfamily is one of the largest and most diverse families of proteins in the human genome. Their widespread involvement in cellular communication makes them significant targets for pharmaceutical drug development, with many existing medications designed to modulate the activity of these receptors.
