It refers to the biological environment within the Golgi apparatus, a key organelle in eukaryotic cells. The Golgi apparatus is responsible for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles. Its internal structure consists of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae, which are organized into functional compartments: the cis-Golgi network (CGN), medial cisternae, and the trans-Golgi network (TGN).

Proteins and lipids synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are transported to the CGN and then move through the medial cisternae, undergoing various modifications such as glycosylation, phosphorylation, and proteolytic cleavage.
