Glükuronsavat, also known as glucuronic acid, is a uronic acid derived from glucose. In biological systems, it is a significant component of many important macromolecules, including glycosaminoglycans like hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and heparin. These polysaccharides play crucial roles in the structure and function of connective tissues, cell signaling, and lubrication. Glucuronic acid is also a key part of the detoxification process in the liver. Through a process called glucuronidation, the liver attaches glucuronic acid to various toxins, drugs, and metabolic byproducts. This conjugation makes these substances more water-soluble, facilitating their excretion from the body in urine or bile.

The formation of glucuronic acid occurs through the oxidation of the primary alcohol group of glucose. This process is primarily carried out by the enzyme UDP-glucose dehydrogenase. The resulting molecule is then activated and can be used in the synthesis of various glycoconjugates. Its presence in the body is essential for maintaining tissue integrity and for eliminating potentially harmful substances. Changes in glucuronic acid metabolism or its incorporation into macromolecules can be associated with certain diseases and conditions, highlighting its importance in physiological processes.
