Glükoolidel

Glükoolidel is a term used to describe a class of organic compounds that contain more than one hydroxyl group attached to a carbon chain. These are also known as polyols. The simplest and most common example is ethylene glycol, which has two hydroxyl groups. Another well-known example is glycerol, which has three hydroxyl groups. The presence of multiple hydroxyl groups makes glycols highly soluble in water and other polar solvents.

Glycols find a wide range of applications due to their unique properties. Ethylene glycol is a primary component in antifreeze formulations, effectively lowering the freezing point of water and raising its boiling point. It is also used in the production of polyester fibers and resins, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly used in plastic bottles and clothing. Propylene glycol, another common glycol, is utilized in food and pharmaceutical products as a humectant, solvent, and preservative. It is also found in e-cigarettes and is used in theatrical fog machines.

The properties of glycols can be tailored by varying the number and arrangement of hydroxyl groups and the length of the carbon chain. This versatility makes them valuable in numerous industrial and consumer products. While many glycols are safe for their intended uses, some, like ethylene glycol, can be toxic if ingested and require careful handling.
