Glukózagalaktóza

Glukózagalaktóza is a disaccharide, meaning it is composed of two simpler sugar units. Specifically, it is formed by the linkage of glucose and galactose molecules. This carbohydrate can be found naturally in some foods and is also produced through the enzymatic breakdown of lactose, also known as milk sugar. When lactose is hydrolyzed, it yields one molecule of glucose and one molecule of galactose.

The presence of glukózagalaktóza in the diet is relevant to human digestion and metabolism. In individuals with lactose intolerance, the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose into glucose and galactose in the small intestine, is deficient. This can lead to undigested lactose reaching the large intestine, where it is fermented by bacteria, causing symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

While glukózagalaktóza itself is a readily absorbable sugar once broken down, the body's ability to process lactose is the primary factor in lactose intolerance. In infants, galactose is an important component of breast milk and is utilized for energy and growth. In adults, both glucose and galactose are metabolized by the body, with glucose serving as a primary energy source.
