Glukoosien
Glukoosien is a Finnish term referring to glucose molecules. Glucose is a simple sugar, a monosaccharide, which is fundamental to life. It is the primary source of energy for cells in most organisms, including humans. Glucose is produced during photosynthesis by plants and algae, serving as their main form of chemical energy. Animals obtain glucose through their diet, consuming plants or other animals that have ingested plants. Within the body, glucose is transported through the bloodstream and taken up by cells to be used in cellular respiration. This process breaks down glucose to release energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which powers cellular functions. The body tightly regulates blood glucose levels through hormones like insulin and glucagon to ensure a consistent energy supply. Excess glucose can be stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles or converted into fat for long-term energy reserves. Disorders related to glucose metabolism, such as diabetes, can have significant health consequences.
