Glucosetransportører, also known as glucose transporters or GLUTs, are a family of integral membrane proteins that facilitate the transport of glucose across cell membranes. These proteins are crucial for cellular energy metabolism, as glucose is a primary energy source for most cells. There are several different types of GLUTs, each with distinct characteristics in terms of their location, affinity for glucose, and regulatory mechanisms.

GLUT1 is ubiquitously expressed and responsible for basal glucose uptake in most cells, particularly red blood cells and the brain. GLUT2 has a low affinity for glucose and is primarily found in the liver, pancreas, and intestines, playing a role in glucose sensing and release. GLUT3 is the main transporter in neurons, ensuring a constant supply of glucose to the brain. GLUT4 is insulin-dependent and found in adipose tissue and muscle cells, where it is translocated to the cell surface in response to insulin, increasing glucose uptake after a meal. Other GLUT transporters, such as GLUT5, are specific for fructose transport.
