Glucarates

Glucarates are a class of chemical compounds derived from glucaric acid. Glucaric acid itself is a naturally occurring sugar acid found in plants, though it is also produced industrially. Glucarates are typically salts or esters of glucaric acid. The most common glucarate is calcium glucarate, a calcium salt.

Calcium glucarate has been explored for various applications. It is sometimes used as a dietary supplement, with proponents suggesting it may aid in detoxification processes by inhibiting beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that can reabsorb toxins from the intestines. However, scientific evidence supporting these specific claims in humans is limited and requires further investigation. Calcium glucarate is also used in some food products as a stabilizer or firming agent.

Other glucarates, such as potassium glucarate, have also been synthesized and studied, though they are less common than calcium glucarate. The ester forms of glucaric acid are also of chemical interest and can be synthesized in laboratories.
