Glucagonfrisättning

Glucagonfrisättning refers to the process by which the hormone glucagon is released from the alpha cells of the pancreas. This release is primarily triggered by low blood glucose levels. When the body detects that blood sugar is falling, such as during fasting or prolonged exercise, the pancreas responds by secreting glucagon into the bloodstream.

The main function of glucagon is to counteract the effects of insulin and raise blood glucose levels. It achieves this by signaling the liver to break down stored glycogen into glucose, a process known as glycogenolysis, and to synthesize new glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, a process called gluconeogenesis. The glucose produced is then released into the bloodstream, thereby restoring blood sugar to a normal range.

Factors that influence glucagonfrisättning include not only low blood glucose but also the presence of certain amino acids and hormones like adrenaline. Conversely, high blood glucose levels and the hormone insulin suppress glucagon secretion. This hormonal system, involving both insulin and glucagon, plays a critical role in maintaining glucose homeostasis, ensuring that the body's cells have a consistent supply of energy. Dysregulation of glucagonfrisättning can contribute to metabolic disorders like diabetes.
