Glomerulaarisairaudet refers to a group of kidney diseases that primarily affect the glomeruli. The glomeruli are tiny filtering units within the kidneys responsible for removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood to produce urine. When these structures become inflamed or damaged, their ability to filter blood effectively is impaired, leading to various symptoms and potential kidney dysfunction.

These diseases can be broadly classified into primary glomerular diseases, which originate within the glomeruli themselves, and secondary glomerular diseases, which are caused by other systemic conditions like diabetes, lupus, or infections. Symptoms can vary widely but often include blood or protein in the urine, swelling (edema) in the legs, ankles, or face, high blood pressure, and fatigue. In some cases, the damage to the glomeruli can be acute and reversible, while in others, it can be chronic and lead to progressive kidney failure.

Diagnosis typically involves urine tests to detect protein and blood, blood tests to assess kidney function, and sometimes a kidney biopsy for a definitive diagnosis and to determine the specific type and severity of the glomerular disease. Treatment strategies are tailored to the underlying cause and type of glomerular disease and may include medications to reduce inflammation, control blood pressure, and manage other underlying conditions. In severe cases where kidney function is significantly compromised, dialysis or kidney transplantation may be necessary.
