Globemallow

Globemallow refers to a group of plants in the genus Sphaeralcea, part of the mallow family Malvaceae. These plants are native to North and South America, with many species found in arid and semi-arid regions of western North America. Globemallows are typically herbaceous perennials or subshrubs, characterized by their distinctive cup-shaped, often brightly colored flowers that resemble small globes. The flowers, commonly in shades of orange, pink, or purple, appear from spring through summer.

The leaves of globemallow plants are usually palmately lobed or divided, and often covered in a fine, soft fuzz or stellate hairs, which helps them conserve water. This adaptation makes them well-suited to dry environments. Many species are drought-tolerant and thrive in full sun and well-drained soils. Due to their attractive flowers and hardiness, some globemallow species are cultivated as ornamental plants, particularly in xeriscaping and native plant gardens. Various indigenous peoples have historically used different globemallow species for medicinal purposes, such as for treating skin irritations and as a demulcent.
