Glikokonjugátumok are biomolecules formed by the covalent attachment of carbohydrates to other types of molecules, typically proteins or lipids. These complex structures play crucial roles in a wide array of biological processes. When carbohydrates are attached to proteins, the resulting molecules are called glycoproteins. If they are attached to lipids, they form glycolipids. The carbohydrate portion, known as the glycan, can vary significantly in size and complexity, ranging from a single sugar unit to highly branched chains. The specific structure of the glycan is often critical for the molecule's function.

The synthesis of glycoconjugates, a process known as glycosylation, is a complex enzymatic pathway that occurs primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus of eukaryotic cells. The precise assembly of the glycan chains is crucial, as even minor alterations can lead to significant changes in biological activity or can be indicative of disease states.

Glycoconjugates are involved in cell-cell recognition, immune responses, protein folding and stability, and signal transduction. For instance, glycoproteins on the surface of cells act as markers that allow cells to identify and interact with each other, which is essential for tissue development and immune surveillance. Glycolipids are also important components of cell membranes, contributing to their structure and mediating cell surface interactions. Aberrant glycosylation is implicated in various diseases, including cancer and inflammatory disorders, making glycoconjugates an active area of research in both fundamental biology and drug development.
