Gleichgewichts is a term that appears in various scientific contexts, most notably in thermodynamics and chemistry, to describe a state of balance. In these fields, Gleichgewichts refers to a condition where opposing processes occur at equal rates, resulting in no net change in the system's macroscopic properties. This does not mean that molecular activity has ceased, but rather that the forward and reverse reactions or processes are perfectly matched.

In chemical kinetics, chemical Gleichgewichts is achieved when the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction. At this point, the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant over time, although the reactions continue to occur. This equilibrium state can be described by an equilibrium constant, which indicates the relative amounts of products and reactants present at equilibrium.

A system is in thermodynamic equilibrium when it is simultaneously in thermal, mechanical, and chemical equilibrium. Thermal equilibrium means there is no net flow of heat between parts of the system. Mechanical equilibrium implies no net force acting on any part of the system. Chemical equilibrium, as discussed, means no net chemical change is occurring.
