Gimpo

Gimpo is a city in the northwest part of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It lies within the Seoul Capital Area, adjacent to Seoul and Incheon, and serves as a suburban base for commuting to the capital region. The city is home to Gimpo International Airport, located on the western edge, which historically provided the region’s primary air links to domestic destinations and several international routes; since the opening of Incheon International Airport, Gimpo's role has shifted toward domestic services and regional connections.

Historically, Gimpo was part of the larger Gyeonggi region and functioned as a rural area before urban development. It was designated as a county in the Joseon era and was promoted to a city in 1995 as part of administrative reorganization within the province.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Gimpo underwent rapid urban development. The creation of Gimpo New Town and surrounding housing projects aimed to accommodate growth in the western Seoul metropolitan area. The city maintains agricultural areas and parks amid residential and light industrial zones.

Gimpo is served by road networks and public transport linking it to Seoul and Incheon, and it remains an important air gateway for the western part of the Seoul metropolitan region.
