Geschäftsklimaindices, often translated as business climate indices, are economic indicators that measure the sentiment and expectations of businesses regarding the current and future economic situation. These indices are typically compiled through surveys of a representative sample of companies across various sectors of an economy. Participants are asked about their current business conditions, order levels, production, employment, and their outlook for the next six months.

The most well-known Geschäftsklimaindex is the Ifo Business Climate Index, produced by the Ifo Institute in Germany. This index is based on monthly surveys and aggregates responses on both the current situation and business expectations. A reading above 100 generally suggests a positive business climate, while a reading below 100 indicates a less optimistic outlook. Changes in the index are closely watched by economists, policymakers, and investors as they can signal turning points in economic cycles and influence investment and consumption decisions.

Other countries and regions also publish similar business climate indices, often using slightly different methodologies or focusing on specific industries. These indicators are valuable tools for understanding the dynamic nature of economic activity and for forecasting future economic trends. They provide a forward-looking perspective that complements backward-looking data such as GDP.
