Geschäftsanforderungen, often translated as business requirements, are the high-level needs and goals of an organization that drive the need for a project or initiative. They describe what the business intends to achieve and the problems it aims to solve. These requirements are typically documented early in the project lifecycle and serve as a foundation for subsequent, more detailed requirements.

The purpose of business requirements is to align stakeholders on the overall objectives and scope of a project. They answer the question "why" a project is being undertaken. Examples of business requirements might include increasing market share, reducing operational costs, improving customer satisfaction, or complying with new regulations. They are often expressed in terms of business value and expected outcomes.

Business requirements are distinct from functional and non-functional requirements, which delve into the specifics of how a system or product should behave and its performance characteristics. While business requirements set the vision, functional and non-functional requirements detail the implementation. Effective business requirements are clear, concise, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), although the time-bound aspect is often implied by the project timeline. They are crucial for ensuring that projects deliver tangible value to the business.
