Gesamtwärmeübertragung, often abbreviated as GÜT, refers to the total rate at which heat is transferred between two systems. This concept is fundamental in thermodynamics and heat transfer engineering, encompassing all modes of heat transfer that occur simultaneously. The primary modes of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact of particles. Convection involves heat transfer through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases). Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. In many real-world scenarios, these modes do not act in isolation but rather in combination. For example, heat transfer through a wall might involve conduction through the material, convection from the air to the wall surface, and radiation exchange between the wall and its surroundings.

The Gesamtwärmeübertragung quantifies the net effect of these combined heat transfer mechanisms. It is typically expressed in units of power, such as Watts (W) or Joules per second (J/s), representing the amount of thermal energy transferred per unit time. The overall heat transfer coefficient, often denoted by U, is a key parameter used in calculating GÜT. This coefficient accounts for the thermal resistances of all the different materials and interfaces involved in the heat transfer process.
