Gesamtanlageneffektivität, often abbreviated as OEE, is a key performance indicator used in manufacturing to measure the efficiency of a production facility. It quantifies how well a manufacturing operation is utilized compared to its full potential, during the periods when it is scheduled to run. The calculation of OEE is based on three factors: availability, performance, and quality.

Availability considers losses due to equipment downtime, such as breakdowns or planned maintenance. Performance accounts for losses due to slow cycles or minor stoppages, meaning the equipment runs but not at its ideal speed. Quality measures losses due to defects or rework, where the product manufactured does not meet the required standards.

The OEE score is expressed as a percentage, with higher scores indicating better overall equipment effectiveness. A perfect OEE score of 100% would mean the equipment ran at its theoretical maximum speed, without any downtime or defects, for the entire scheduled production time.

Implementing OEE helps identify areas for improvement within the production process. By tracking and analyzing OEE, manufacturers can pinpoint the root causes of inefficiencies and implement targeted strategies to reduce losses, increase throughput, and ultimately improve profitability. It is a widely adopted metric in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
