Gerincnyílásokat, often translated as vertebral foramen or spinal canal, refers to the opening formed by the vertebral arch of each vertebra in the spine. These openings are aligned one above the other, creating a continuous channel that runs from the base of the skull to the sacrum. This vital structure, the spinal canal, encases and protects the spinal cord, which is a crucial part of the central nervous system.

Each gerincnyílás consists of the posterior aspect of the vertebral body and the anterior aspect of the vertebral arch. The vertebral arch itself is formed by the pedicles, which project posteriorly from the vertebral body, and the laminae, which extend from the pedicles to meet in the midline, forming the spinous process.
