Geostruktur

Geostruktur refers to the structural arrangement of the Earth's crust and upper mantle, which is primarily composed of tectonic plates. These plates are large, rigid segments of the Earth's lithosphere that move relative to one another, driven by the convection currents in the underlying asthenosphere. The boundaries where these plates meet are known as plate boundaries, and they can be classified into three main types: divergent, convergent, and transform.

Divergent boundaries occur where two plates move apart from each other, allowing magma from the mantle to rise and form new crust. This process is responsible for the creation of mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys. Convergent boundaries, on the other hand, occur where two plates collide. Depending on the type of crust involved, this can result in the formation of mountain ranges, volcanic arcs, or subduction zones, where one plate is forced beneath another. Transform boundaries occur where two plates slide past each other, resulting in strike-slip faulting.
