Geordi

Geordi La Forge is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise. He appears as a Starfleet officer and engineer who serves as chief engineer aboard the starship USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994). He is portrayed by actor LeVar Burton. The character later appears in several Star Trek feature films featuring the TNG cast.

Geordi is blind and relies on a VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement) to perceive sight by translating electromagnetic wavelengths into images the brain can interpret. The device provides him with a broad range of vision across the spectrum, though it has limitations and occasionally requires maintenance. In the later timeline, he sometimes uses ocular implants, depending on the story.

As a lieutenant commander (later promoted), La Forge is responsible for the ship’s warp propulsion systems, power distribution, and other critical engineering functions. He is known for his technical ingenuity, problem-solving ability, and dry humor. He develops a strong rapport with colleagues such as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander Data, and serves as a stabilizing technical lead during crises.

In the Star Trek canon, Geordi represents one of the original franchise’s prominent portrayals of disability and technology, illustrating themes of adaptation and capability. The character’s portrayal by LeVar Burton contributed to broader representation in science fiction media. He appears in subsequent Star Trek media, including continued tie-ins with the TNG cast and later appearances in Star Trek: Picard.
