Genomhållning

Genomhållning is a Swedish term that translates to "genome conservation" or "genome preservation" in English. It refers to the deliberate efforts to safeguard and maintain the genetic diversity of species. This practice is crucial for ensuring the long-term survival of populations and ecosystems, especially in the face of environmental changes, habitat loss, and human-induced pressures.

The primary goal of genomhållning is to prevent genetic erosion, which is the loss of genetic variation within a population. Genetic diversity is the foundation of a species' ability to adapt to new challenges, such as diseases or climate shifts. When genetic diversity is low, populations become more vulnerable and may struggle to survive.

Methods of genomhållning can vary.
