Genitivemerkintä

Genitivemerkintä, or genitive marking, is a grammatical device used to express a genitive relationship between nouns. It usually signals possession or association, but it can also mark origin, measurement, or attribution. The marker is typically attached to the possessor noun or phrase, though the exact mechanism varies by language.

Across languages, genitive marking takes several forms. In inflected languages, the possessor noun often carries a genitive ending or participates in a genitive case system with determiner agreement. Examples include German, where the possessor appears in the genitive form of the noun and determiner (das Haus → des Hauses), and Finnish, where the possessor noun often bears a genitive ending in singular (talo → talon) to indicate “of the house.” In analytic or non-inflected languages, genitive relations are expressed by periphrastic constructions or prepositions or particles. English uses the possessive 's or the prepositional phrase of the house (the door of the house). Mandarin Chinese commonly uses the particle de (的) to form attributive genitive constructions (fángzi de mén, “house’s door”).

Genitive marking serves multiple functions beyond possession. It can indicate part-whole relationships, measurements, authorship, kinship, or attributes connected to a noun. Some languages rely heavily on genitive case markings, while others prefer adpositions, clitics, or word order to convey the same relationships. The term genitive itself derives from Latin genitivus, reflecting its historical study in the grammar of Indo-European languages.
