Genitiivse

Genitiivse is a term used in some Finnic-language grammars to denote the genitive case. The genitive is a grammatical category that marks relationships within noun phrases and often expresses possession, origin, material, or part-whole connections. In languages that rely on inflection, the genitive appears as a distinct form of the noun; in more analytic languages, its function is realized through prepositions or possessive constructions.

In morphology, the genitive is characterized by its own set of endings or alterations to the noun, which vary across languages and noun classes. It can indicate ownership (the book of the girl), relationship (the city’s streets), or quantity and measure (three days’ notice). Some languages use a single genitive form for all determiner-noun combinations, while others require agreement with adjectives, pronouns, or numerals.

Cross-linguistically, genitive usage includes several common functions: expressing possession, describing material composition, indicating source or origin, and marking part of a whole. Examples span multiple language families: Latin and German use explicit genitive inflections to show possession; Russian employs genitive forms after numerals and in certain syntactic constructions; English often substitutes the genitive with ’s or the prepositional phrase of. In each case, the genitive helps clarify relationships between nouns within a sentence.
