Geländeaerosole, translated as terrain aerosols, refers to fine particles suspended in the atmosphere that originate from or are influenced by the Earth's surface. These aerosols can be composed of a variety of substances, including dust, sea salt, volcanic ash, biological material, and anthropogenic pollutants like soot and sulfates. Their size typically ranges from a few nanometers to several micrometers in diameter.

The formation of terrain aerosols is a complex process involving several mechanisms. Wind erosion of dry soils and deserts is a primary source of mineral dust, which can be transported over long distances. Sea spray generated by ocean waves releases salt particles into the atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions inject ash and sulfur dioxide, which can form secondary aerosols. Biological sources include pollen, fungal spores, and bacteria. Anthropogenic activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and biomass, contribute significantly to the atmospheric aerosol load, often forming secondary aerosols through chemical reactions.
