This compartment is typically smaller than a full-sized freezer and is integrated into a standard refrigerator unit. Its primary function is to provide a space for short-term freezing of items like ice cream, frozen vegetables, or small portions of leftovers.

The temperature within a Gefrierfächer is maintained at a level suitable for freezing, usually around -18 degrees Celsius or lower, although this can vary by model. This lower temperature inhibits the growth of microorganisms, thereby preserving food for longer periods than refrigeration alone.
