Gefäßschädigung

Gefäßschädigung refers to damage to blood vessels, which can affect arteries, veins, or capillaries. This damage can range from minor disruptions to severe structural changes, impacting the vessel's ability to transport blood efficiently.

Causes of Gefäßschädigung are diverse. Atherosclerosis, a common condition, involves the buildup of plaque within arteries, leading to hardening and narrowing. High blood pressure (hypertension) exerts excessive force on vessel walls, causing gradual wear and tear. Diabetes mellitus can lead to microvascular damage, affecting smaller vessels, particularly in the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Inflammatory conditions like vasculitis directly attack and inflame blood vessel walls. Trauma, including injuries and surgical procedures, can also cause direct damage.

The consequences of Gefäßschädigung depend on the affected vessels and the extent of the damage. Arterial damage can lead to reduced blood flow to organs, potentially causing strokes, heart attacks, or peripheral artery disease. Venous damage can result in blood clots (thrombosis), swelling, and skin changes. Capillary damage can impair nutrient and oxygen exchange with tissues.

Diagnosis involves medical history, physical examination, and imaging techniques such as ultrasound, angiography, and CT scans. Treatment strategies aim to address the underlying cause, manage risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol, and prevent complications through medications, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgical interventions.
