Geenisäätelyyn refers to the complex processes that control which genes are expressed, when and where they are expressed, and how much protein or functional RNA they produce. This regulation is crucial for cellular differentiation, development, and response to environmental changes. In multicellular organisms, gene regulation allows for the specialization of cells into various types, such as nerve cells, muscle cells, and skin cells, all originating from a single fertilized egg.

Regulation can occur at multiple levels, including DNA accessibility, transcription, RNA processing, translation, and protein activity. Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, play a significant role by altering chromatin structure without changing the underlying DNA sequence, thereby influencing gene expression. Transcription factors, proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences, are key regulators of transcription initiation. They can act as activators or repressors, either promoting or inhibiting gene expression.

Post-transcriptional regulation involves modifying messenger RNA (mRNA) after it has been transcribed from DNA. This includes processes like alternative splicing, which allows a single gene to produce multiple protein isoforms, and the regulation of mRNA stability and translation by small non-coding RNAs like microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). Translational control affects the rate at which mRNA is translated into protein. Finally, post-translational modifications can alter protein function, stability, or localization, providing another layer of gene expression control.
