Geenialueet (Finnish for gene regions) refer to stretches of the genome that are associated with genes, including the protein-coding sequences themselves and surrounding regulatory elements that control transcription and expression. In most organisms, gene regions encompass exons, introns, and untranslated regions, as well as promoters, enhancers, silencers, and insulators that influence when, where, and how strongly a gene is expressed. The exact boundaries of a gene region may vary by annotation and by transcript, because many genes produce multiple RNA isoforms through alternative splicing.

In bacteria and archaea, gene regions can be compact, commonly organized into operons where multiple genes are co-transcribed. In eukaryotes, gene regions are typically larger and more complex, with extended regulatory landscapes that may span tens of kilobases upstream or downstream of the coding sequence. Non-coding RNAs located within or near gene regions also contribute to regulatory functions.

Gene annotation projects aim to delineate gene regions by integrating genomic, transcriptomic, and comparative data. Determining precise boundaries is challenging due to alternative transcripts, overlapping genes, and pervasive transcription of non-coding elements. Changes in gene-region definitions can affect downstream analyses, such as variant interpretation, gene expression studies, and genome editing.
