Gebiedsverdediging

Gebiedsverdediging, often translated as area defense, is a military concept focusing on the defense of a specific geographical area rather than the mobile engagement of enemy forces. The primary objective is to prevent enemy penetration and control of the designated territory through a combination of static defenses, troop deployments, and potentially mobile reserves. This strategy is often employed when an army lacks the resources for offensive operations, is defending strategically important terrain, or wishes to impose heavy casualties on an attacking force.

Key elements of gebiedsverdediging include the establishment of strong defensive positions, such as fortifications, minefields, and anti-tank obstacles. Troops are positioned to cover approaches, key terrain, and potential enemy avenues of advance. The defense relies on interlocking fields of fire, surprise, and the ability to channel enemy attacks into kill zones.
