Garoua

Garoua is a city in the northern part of Cameroon. It is the capital of the North Region and a major regional urban center situated on the banks of the Benue River.

Historically, Garoua developed as a trading post linked to trans-Saharan trade routes and later became an administrative and commercial hub during the colonial era. Today it serves as the region’s administrative center and a focal point for commerce and transport in the area.

The economy of Garoua is diversified, with a strong emphasis on markets and trade in goods such as agricultural produce, livestock, and crafts. Agriculture around the city includes crops like sorghum, millet, maize, and peanuts, while fishing on the Benue River is also important. The surrounding hinterland supports livestock rearing.

The population is diverse, comprising Fulani (Fula) and other ethnic groups common to northern Cameroon. French and local languages, notably Fulfulde, are used in daily life, with local markets and cultural events reflecting the region’s heritage.

Garoua has a hot semi-arid climate with a lengthy dry season and a rainy season that generally runs from May to October. The harmattan, a dry dusty wind, can be felt in the cooler months.

The city is connected by road to other major towns and is served by Garoua Airport, providing regional air links. It is a focal point for education, health services, and regional administration in the North.
