In the narrative, Gandof is a dwarf master smith known for forging the famed sword "Hearthbane," which is said to have the ability to pierce any invulnerable armor. According to the texts, Gandof was born in the subterranean kingdom of Harkrith and trained under the master smith Gromeloth before traveling to the surface world to spread his craft.

During the events of the first book, Gandof assists the hero, Elara of the North, in crafting a shield that protects the kingdom of Eridar from an invading army of bandits. His creations are described as being made of a rare alloy called "Smarite," prized for its resilience and beautiful sheen. Gandof's reputation extends beyond Narl; traders and warriors from neighboring realms seek his services, and some claim he can tune weapons to resonate with the elemental spirits.
