It is characterized by a partial clearing of the red blood cells around a bacterial colony grown on an agar plate containing blood. This partial clearing is due to the activity of certain bacterial enzymes, typically hemolysins, that partially degrade the hemoglobin within the red blood cells. Unlike complete or alpha-hemolysis, where a clear zone is visible, gamma-hemolysis results in a greenish discoloration of the agar surrounding the colony. This discoloration is a result of the altered hemoglobin. The term "gammahemolyysiä" itself is Finnish, translating directly to "gamma hemolysis." This phenomenon is a key diagnostic characteristic used in the identification and classification of various bacterial species, particularly those belonging to the Enterococcus and Staphylococcus genera.
