GalKFGalKE

GalKFGalKE is a proposed or engineered bifunctional protein that fuses the N-terminal galactokinase (GalK) catalytic domain with a C-terminal GalKE regulatory or kinase-like domain. The name reflects the combination of GalK from the Leloir pathway and a GalKE-related domain whose exact function varies in different contexts, and may be found in certain bacteria or synthetic biology constructs.

GalK is the first enzyme in the Leloir pathway, catalyzing the phosphorylation of galactose to galactose-1-phosphate using ATP. The GalKE designation is used for a family of domains associated with galactose metabolism; their precise biochemical roles are not uniformly defined and can include regulatory interactions with GalK or related metabolic components.
