GTINnúmer

GTINnúmer is the Norwegian abbreviation for Global Trade Item Number. It is a unique identifier used globally for products. A GTIN is a barcode standard that can be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits long. It is managed by GS1, a global organization that develops and maintains standards for business communication. The primary purpose of a GTIN is to facilitate the identification and tracking of products throughout the supply chain.

Companies obtain GTINs to assign to their products, which are then encoded into barcodes. These barcodes are scanned at various points, such as during manufacturing, at retail checkouts, and in warehouses. This ensures accurate inventory management, efficient sales transactions, and simplified product recalls. Different types of GTINs exist, including GTIN-8, GTIN-12 (often referred to as UPC), GTIN-13 (often referred to as EAN), and GTIN-14. The length of the GTIN depends on the product and the intended market. In Norway, GTINnúmer is the standard term used for these product identifiers.
