GString

G-string is a term with multiple meanings across different contexts. In music, it refers to the string on a stringed instrument that is tuned to the note G. The exact position and pitch of the G-string vary by instrument; for example, on most guitars it is the third string from the bottom, tuned to G, while on violins it is the lowest-pitched string.

In clothing, a G-string is a type of thong underwear or bikini bottom characterized by minimal rear coverage. The garment typically features a narrow waistband and a string or very thin fabric that runs between the buttocks, with coverage at the front. G-strings are used in fashion, swimwear, and certain performance contexts.

Etymology and usage differ by context. For the musical sense, the name simply denotes the string tuned to G across instruments. For the underwear sense, the term reflects the thong’s slender back design and the prominent string or string-like element that forms the rear portion of the garment.
