GMDSSjärjestelmään
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, or GMDSS, is an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, equipment types, and communication protocols used to improve safety and the ability to rescue distressed ships, boats, and aircraft. GMDSS is a shore-based system that uses terrestrial and satellite communications, along with ship-based equipment, to provide reliable distress alerting and communication capabilities. Its primary purpose is to automate distress, urgency, and safety communications, making it easier for rescue coordination centers to locate and assist vessels in distress.
The system is operated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is mandatory for all ships sailing
Key components of GMDSS include distress alerting devices such as EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons)
