GHStimulationstests, also known as growth hormone stimulation tests, are medical procedures used to assess the body's ability to produce and release sufficient growth hormone (GH). Growth hormone is essential for growth and development in children and plays a role in metabolism and body composition in adults. These tests are typically performed when there is a suspicion of growth hormone deficiency.

The tests involve administering a substance that is known to stimulate GH release and then measuring GH levels in the blood at regular intervals. Several different stimulating agents can be used, including insulin, arginine, glucagon, and clonidine. The choice of agent may depend on the patient's age, medical history, and the specific clinical question being addressed. Before the test, patients are usually required to fast overnight.

During the test, an intravenous line is inserted to allow for blood draws. The stimulating agent is then administered, either intravenously or orally, depending on the drug. Blood samples are collected over a period of typically two to three hours, with measurements taken at baseline and at set intervals afterward. The highest GH level achieved is compared to established reference ranges to determine if adequate GH secretion has occurred.

Abnormal results can indicate growth hormone deficiency, which may require further investigation and potential treatment with synthetic growth hormone. These tests are an important diagnostic tool for endocrinologists evaluating growth problems, short stature, or other symptoms suggestive of GH deficiency.
