GHScompliant refers to a chemical substance, mixture, or related product, its label, and accompanying safety documentation that meet the requirements of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS is an international framework developed by the United Nations to standardize how hazards are classified and communicated across borders. It covers physical, health, and environmental hazards and prescribes standardized elements for communication.

A GHS compliant package typically includes clearly visible hazard pictograms, a signal word (such as Danger or Warning), hazard statements that describe the nature of the hazards, and precautionary statements that advise on safe handling and emergency measures. Labels also specify the product identifier and supplier contact information. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) accompanying the product follows a structured format, usually with 16 sections, and provides detailed information on properties, hazards, composition, first aid, handling, storage, exposure controls, and disposal.

Implementation and scope vary by jurisdiction. Many countries implement GHS through national regulations such as the EU’s CLP Regulation, the United States HazCom system, and Canada’s WHMIS. While the core concepts of classification and communication are consistent, specific pictograms, hazard classes, and version dates may differ according to locally adopted GHS revisions.

Responsibilities are distributed among manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers. Manufacturers and importers classify hazards, label containers, and prepare SDSs; employers ensure proper labeling, employee training, and safe handling in the workplace. Compliance requires periodic updates to reflect new GHS revisions and regulatory changes.
