GFCIsuojakytkin, known in English as a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet or circuit breaker, is a safety device designed to protect people from electric shock. It works by monitoring the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If it detects an imbalance, meaning more current is flowing out than returning, it assumes the current is leaking to a ground path, which could be a person. In such a scenario, the GFCI quickly shuts off the power.

These devices are particularly important in areas where electricity and water are present, such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor locations. They are designed to trip much faster and at a lower current than a standard circuit breaker, making them significantly more effective at preventing electrocution. GFCI protection is often required by electrical codes in new construction and renovations for these specific areas to enhance safety.

There are two main types of GFCI protection: GFCI outlets, which replace standard electrical outlets, and GFCI circuit breakers, which are installed in the main electrical panel and protect an entire circuit. Both types serve the same fundamental purpose of rapidly interrupting power when a ground fault is detected. Regular testing of GFCI devices is recommended to ensure they are functioning correctly.
