GAPt

GAPt stands for "GTPase Activating Protein domain". It is a protein domain that plays a crucial role in regulating the activity of GTPases, a family of proteins involved in a wide range of cellular processes including signal transduction, cell growth, and cytoskeletal organization.

GTPases cycle between an active, GTP-bound state and an inactive, GDP-bound state. GAPt proteins act as negative regulators of GTPase activity by accelerating the hydrolysis of GTP to GDP. This process effectively switches the GTPase off. The GAPt domain binds to the GTPase and facilitates the release of the gamma-phosphate from GTP. This interaction is highly specific and ensures that only certain GTPases are regulated by a particular GAPt protein.

GAPt domains are found in a diverse array of proteins, reflecting the broad importance of GTPase regulation.
