Förkastning

Förkastning is a geological term describing a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. This displacement allows the blocks to move relative to each other. These movements can occur over millions of years and can result in significant geological changes. Faults are not typically seen as single clean breaks, but rather as zones where the rock is fractured and broken over a wider area.

The blocks on either side of a fault are called the footwall and the hanging wall. The footwall is the block of rock that lies beneath the fault plane, while the hanging wall is the block that lies above it. The type of fault depends on the relative motion of these blocks.

There are several main types of faults. Normal faults occur when the hanging wall moves down relative to the footwall, usually due to tensional forces. Reverse faults occur when the hanging wall moves up relative to the footwall, typically due to compressional forces. Thrust faults are a type of reverse fault where the fault plane has a very low angle. Strike-slip faults involve blocks moving horizontally past each other.

Faults are a major cause of earthquakes. When stress builds up along a fault, it can be released suddenly, causing the ground to shake. The study of faults is crucial for understanding seismic activity, as well as for geological mapping and resource exploration.
