Förhistoriska refers to the period before written records in a region, when cultures developed without sustained written documentation. The term is used in archaeology and historical research to discuss human life, society, technology, and environment before the appearance of writing. Etymology: Swedish förhistoriska from för- 'before' and historiska 'historical', aligning with the Latin historia via French.

Scope and periodization: In Europe, the common framework includes the Stone Age (Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic), followed by Bronze Age and Iron Age. In other regions, the timing and sequence vary; writing systems emerged at different moments, marking the end of prehistory for those areas. The concept helps compare diverse developments, from hunter-gatherer lifeways to early farming and urbanizing societies.

Archaeology and evidence: Knowledge comes from material remains: tools, pottery, dwellings, graves, rock art, and monumental structures. Dating relies on radiocarbon analysis, dendrochronology, typology, and stratigraphy. Well-known examples include prehistoric cave art in Lascaux (France) and Altamira (Spain), megalithic monuments, and early settlements that reveal trade and technology networks.
