Följeton is a term used in Sweden and other Nordic countries to describe a serial story, typically published in installments in newspapers or magazines. The word originates from the French word "feuilleton," which also referred to a serialized piece of writing. Historically, följetonger were a popular form of entertainment, providing readers with ongoing narratives that kept them engaged with their local publications.

These serials often featured adventure, romance, mystery, or drama, designed to be accessible to a broad audience. The serialized nature meant that each installment would end with a cliffhanger, encouraging readers to purchase the next issue to find out what happened next. This format was particularly prevalent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mirroring the rise of mass media and increasing literacy rates. While the popularity of the traditional newspaper följetong has waned with the advent of other media, the concept of serialized storytelling continues in various forms, including television series and web serials.
